How to Deal With a Wet Basement

Basements are built into the ground, making them vulnerable to moisture from the soil. Over time, water can find its way into the interior and cause various issues.

Wet Basements

Observe the space for any signs of dampness if you’re buying a house with a basement. It’s better to determine any issues before you purchase the property than after because the seller may not even know the problem exists.

Look for water stains on the walls, ceiling and floor. The moisture can be from an overflowing laundry tub or moisture seeping through basement walls, floor or window. High levels of moisture can cause a musty or damp odor.

Wet basements may also be caused by disconnected downspouts, improper landscaping and overflowing gutters. Have your roof and gutters routinely inspected by your local roofing company to immediately fix and issues that may contribute to a wet basement.

Mold is another indication that space is experiencing moisture issues. These organisms might be black, brown, green or yellow. In some cases, efflorescence produces white or grayish ash on the walls. It occurs from salt deposits left from evaporating water. Spalling is when salt deposits from water cause surface to peel or flake when it gets through concrete, brick, or stone.

How You Deal With It

A dehumidifier will be helpful if the moisture problem in your basement isn’t serious. Inspect dryer vents, and seal them only with foil. Your pipes must be insulated, and make sure windows are closed during humid and damp weather conditions. Inspect the foundation for cracks or holes, and think about having your walls painted with waterproof paint or sealer.
